Gia Bình Airport: Accelerated Roadmap Towards Welcoming Its First International Flight in 2026

The Gia Bình International Airport project (Bắc Ninh Province) is entering a decisive and urgent implementation phase. It is no longer just a planning concept but has taken clear shape with an “accelerated roadmap,” the participation of major investors, and close guidance from the authorities. Identified as a “priority mission serving national interests,” the project is expected to become the second gateway airport of the Capital Region, reshaping the aviation infrastructure of Northern Vietnam.

Strategic Vision and Impressive Implementation Roadmap

At a recent progress review meeting, Chairman of the Bắc Ninh Provincial People’s Committee, Mr. Vương Quốc Tuấn, set out specific milestones, reflecting strong political determination to bring the project to completion ahead of schedule:

Short-term goals:

• July 22, 2024: Target date for the Ministry of Construction to issue an official decision on the overall planning adjustment.

• August 19, 2024: Target date to commence the first components of the project.

Long-term goal:

• December 31, 2026: Completion of Phase 1 and the official reception of the first international flights — an ambitious milestone requiring synchronized coordination and extraordinary efforts.

 

 

Outstanding Scale – The Stature of a New Mega Airport

Gia Bình Airport is being shaped with top-tier scale and technical specifications, fully capable of becoming a modern aviation hub for the region.

Airport classification and capacity: Designed to meet ICAO 4E standards, capable of accommodating the world’s largest and most modern wide-body aircraft such as Boeing B777, B787 Dreamliner, Airbus A350, and A321.

Planning area: The total land area covers more than 1,960 hectares. This scale surpasses Nội Bài and Tân Sơn Nhất airports (approximately 1,500 hectares), ranking only behind the mega Long Thành Airport project (5,000 hectares).

Core infrastructure: Includes two parallel runways, ensuring high-frequency takeoff and landing operations.

Projected capacity:

• By 2030: 30 million passengers per year and 1.6 million tons of cargo per year.

• By 2050: Expanded to 50 million passengers per year and 2.5 million tons of cargo per year.

 

 

Correlation with Nội Bài: Reallocating Airspace Capacity

The development strategy for Gia Bình Airport cannot be separated from Nội Bài International Airport. With the two airports located only about 43 km apart, their approach control airspaces overlap. The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has clarified that the overall capacity of this shared airspace is finite.

Therefore, this is not simply an arithmetic addition of capacities, but rather a scientific reallocation of airspace and traffic flow. Accordingly, as Gia Bình Airport’s capacity increases, Nội Bài Airport’s capacity will be adjusted correspondingly to ensure flight safety and optimize operations:

• Adjusted capacity for Nội Bài (projected): Around 35 million passengers per year by 2030, and 60 million passengers per year by 2050.
