In recent years, a term has gradually been shaping the future of the global aviation industry: Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This is not just a trend, but a revolution—a core solution for the aviation sector, from commercial airlines to private jet services, to achieve sustainable development goals.
At JetVina, we believe that understanding and pioneering the use of SAF is not only an environmental responsibility but also a commitment to delivering long-term value and the highest-class service to our clients. This article will explore SAF in detail, its challenges, opportunities, and how JetVina positions itself amid the most significant transformation in aviation since the jet age.
What is Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)?
Essentially, SAF is a jet fuel produced from renewable sources rather than crude oil. These sources are diverse, including used cooking oil, food waste, agricultural by-products, and even carbon dioxide captured from the atmosphere.
The greatest advantage of SAF is that it can be used immediately in existing aircraft without any modifications to engines or fuel systems. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), SAF is a “drop-in” fuel, which can be blended with conventional jet fuel (Jet A-1) at ratios of up to 50%, providing maximum operational flexibility.

Why SAF Is Critical for the Aviation Industry
The aviation sector currently accounts for approximately 3% of global CO2 emissions. However, without breakthrough changes, this figure could rise to 22% by 2050 as other industries decarbonize more rapidly.
To address this challenge, IATA has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. SAF is the most crucial tool to realize this commitment, expected to contribute up to 65% of the total emissions reductions needed. This means that the aviation industry will need to increase its SAF usage from less than 1% today to 60–80% by mid-century.
This is not merely an environmental goal—it has become a business imperative. Large corporations, investors, and customers increasingly demand sustainability reporting across their supply chains, including air travel and aviation services.

Current Challenges and Driving Forces
The biggest challenge is supply. Data from 2025 shows that global SAF production reached only 2.1 million tons, accounting for 0.7% of total aviation fuel consumption. Meanwhile, projected demand by 2035 is 40 million tons, but production capacity is expected to reach only 18 million tons, creating a significant shortfall.
However, the drivers for SAF adoption are becoming increasingly strong:
-
Government Regulations: The European Union has taken the lead with the ReFuelEU regulation, requiring EU airports to achieve a 6% SAF share by 2030. The United Kingdom has set a target of 9.5% by 2030. Other regions, such as Asia-Pacific, are also implementing similar policies.
-
Supply Chain Pressure: Global companies with net-zero commitments are requiring their suppliers, including private jet operators and logistics providers, to provide documentation proving SAF usage.
