Chu Lai Airport (IATA: VCL, ICAO: VVCA) is an airport in Quang Nam province, located in the Chu Lai Open Economic Zone. During the Vietnam War, it was the Chu Lai Air Base of the Republic of Vietnam Air Force and the United States Air Force. On February 22, 2004, construction of the passenger terminal began. On March 22, 2005, the first commercial flight from Tan Son Nhat International Airport landed here. Chu Lai Airport has the largest area among Vietnamese airports, with 3,000 hectares. The runway is 3,050 m long. During the Independence Vietnam War, B-52 aircraft often took off and landed here.

Chu Lai Airport is located in Chu Lai Open Economic Zone in Quang Nam province, between Quang Nam and Quang Ngai provinces, in the central position of the country, in the key economic development region of the Central region, on the North-South traffic axis of railway, road, sea and air, with National Highway 14 connecting from Da Nang Port through the northern districts of the province to the Vietnam-Laos border and the Central Highlands provinces; in the near future, it will connect with the Trans-Asia road system, creating a favorable position for the province in economic exchange with the outside. Quang Nam is located between Da Nang city – the major economic center of the Central region in the North and Dung Quat industrial park, a large industrial park in the South, with Ky Ha port, with many large coastal sandy land areas, near the national power grid system, near fresh water sources, near the road and railway traffic axis.
Chu Lai Airport will be the driving force for the development of the two open economic zones Chu Lai and Dung Quat. Flight operations at the Airport have been closely linking the socio-economic development of the two provinces of Quang Nam – Quang Ngai with the whole region.
1. Location:
Chu Lai Airport is located in Tam Nghia commune, Nui Thanh district, Quang Nam province, in the Southeast of Tam Ky city – Quang Nam province, 27km from Tam Ky city. The airport is located on the shore of Dung Quat bay, 02km from the coast.

2. Development Process:
During the Vietnam Independence War, this was the Chu Lai Air Base of the Republic of Vietnam Air Force and the United States Air Force. After the Vietnamese Government established Chu Lai Open Economic Zone, the Civil Aviation Authority invested in a Passenger Terminal with a total floor area of 2,700 m2, which was started on February 22, 2004, and other facilities to serve the exploitation of flights to Chu Lai airport.
The historic moment came to Chu Lai airport on March 22, 2005, when Vietnam Airlines officially put into operation the commercial route Chu Lai – Ho Chi Minh City and vice versa with a frequency of 2 flights/week on Mondays and Thursdays. In order to better serve the travel needs of the people of Quang Nam, Quang Ngai provinces as well as tourists, and at the same time contribute to creating air connections between Quang Nam, Quang Ngai with Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
Ho Chi Minh City, enhancing cultural, trade and investment exchanges, aiming at socio-economic development with Chu Lai Open Economic Zone and Dung Quat Economic Zone, while accelerating the implementation of the strategy to complete the international and domestic flight network of Vietnam Airlines.
On the afternoon of June 2, 2010, Chu Lai airport continued to welcome a new event – Vietnam Airlines Corporation coordinated with the People’s Committees of Quang Nam and Quang Ngai provinces to organize the opening ceremony of the commercial flight route Hanoi – Chu Lai – Hanoi with a frequency of 04 flights/week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays by Fokker 70 aircraft.
On May 19, 2018, Jetstar Pacific Airlines launched the first flight with the route from Ho Chi Minh City – Chu Lai – Ho Chi Minh City by A320/A321 aircraft. On May 27, 2015, Vietjet Air also launched the first flight from Ho Chi Minh City. Ho Chi Minh City – Chu Lai – Ho Chi Minh City by A320/A321 aircraft marks a new change for Chu Lai Airport.
Passenger volume through the terminal increased dramatically by the end of 2017, reaching nearly 700,000 passengers and at the beginning of 2018, nearly 800,000 passengers through the terminal, cargo began to increase sharply, with an average of about 4 tons of cargo arriving at Chu Lai Airport per day.
In 2019, passenger volume was approximately 1 million passengers. In 2020, despite being affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, passenger volume reached nearly 800,000 passengers through the terminal. Chu Lai airport is planned to become an international transit airport of the region and the area, meeting the needs of trade and socio-economic development of the two provinces of Quang Nam and Quang Ngai in the period of integration and expansion of international investment cooperation.
3. Chu Lai Airport Infrastructure:
Chu Lai Airport is the largest airport in Vietnam with an area of 2006 hectares. It is a civil airport combined with military airport operations, allowed to receive regular and irregular flights, private aircraft, operating up to 24 hours.
According to the Prime Minister’s decision, this airport will soon be invested 11,000 billion VND to become an international cargo airport. With such an investment level, Chu Lai Airport will have a designed capacity of 5 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo per year.
