Tan Son Nhat International Airport has a unique history of construction and development.

Initially, the airport was built in 1930 under the management of the French colonialists and was designed to serve military purposes. By 1956, the US Government supported the expansion of the airport, creating a runway longer than 3000m and made of concrete to replace the original red dirt runway.

During the Vietnam Independence War, Tan Son Nhat Airport became an important military base for the Republic of Vietnam Air Force and the United States Army. After the country was unified, the Vietnamese government took over and directly managed the airport. Since then, the airport has undergone a development process to serve domestic and international civil flights. Today, Tan Son Nhat plays an important role in connecting passengers to the southern provinces and is an important link in Vietnam’s international trade.

Accordingly, the groundbreaking ceremony of package No. 12 for construction and installation of equipment for the T3 passenger terminal project – Tan Son Nhat International Airport was held simultaneously with the groundbreaking ceremony of a number of packages of Long Thanh International Airport.

According to Decision 657 of the Prime Minister, the T3 terminal project includes 3 main items: passenger terminal, high-rise parking garage combined with non-aviation services and overpass system in front of the terminal.

The total investment of the project is 10,990 billion VND. The capital to implement the project is mobilized from ACV’s equity capital (70%) and commercial loans (30%).

The passenger terminal item has a scale of 1 basement and 4 floors above ground, with a total construction floor area of ​​112,500 m2.

The terminal has a linear shape similar to the existing terminal, designed into 2 separate departure and arrival elevations. The terminal has 90 traditional airline check-in counters, 20 automatic bag drop counters and 42 check-in kiosks, 27 boarding gates, 6 departure baggage handling islands and 10 arrival baggage return islands, and 25 passenger security control gates.
