Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)
History of Ho Chi Minh City
When introducing Ho Chi Minh City (formerly known as Saigon), everyone must be proud of the largest city in Vietnam in terms of population and economy, second in area. This land was originally called Prey Nokor, then formed thanks to the exploration of the South by the Nguyen Dynasty. In 1698, Nguyen Huu Canh established Gia Dinh Palace, marking the birth of the city. When the French entered Indochina, to serve the colonial exploitation, Saigon City was established.
The city gradually developed rapidly, becoming one of the two most important cities in Vietnam. Along with Phnom Penh of Cambodia, Saigon was named by the French as the Pearl of the Far East, the most prominent among the colonies of the French colonialists. Saigon was also the capital of the Indochina Federation in the period of 1887 – 1901 (later the French moved the capital of the Indochina Federation outside of Hanoi).
In 1949, Saigon became the capital of the State of Vietnam – a political entity under the Indochina Federation, later the capital of the Republic of Vietnam. In 1955, the Republic of Vietnam was established, Saigon, then the largest city in South Vietnam, was chosen as the capital with the official name of Saigon Capital. Since then, this city has become one of the important urban areas of South Vietnam.
After the collapse of the Republic of Vietnam in the event of April 30, 1975, the territory of Vietnam was completely unified. On July 2, 1976, the National Assembly of the unified Vietnam decided to change the name of Saigon to Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), after the first President of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
