The airport was constructed with a 1,200 m (3,900 ft) runway, giving the Bhutanese government specific requirements for a choice of aircraft to be operated from Paro. They required an 18–20 seat STOL-capable aircraft with operating capabilities which included a high service ceiling, high rate of climb, and high maneuverability. The major requirement for the aircraft was that it must be capable of flying Kolkata – Paro – Kolkata, a 1,200 km (750 mi; 650 nmi) round-trip, without refueling, due to minimal infrastructure availability at Paro. Three aircraft types were considered after flight tests that had been conducted in India and Bhutan between 1978 and 1980; however, none was deemed suitable.

How hard to approach Paro International Airport?

Unlike conventional airports, Paro Airport lacks radar assistance, compelling pilots to rely solely on manual control, thereby flights to Paro Airport are restricted to visual approaches only, and the approach requires a series of sharp turns through the mountains. Strict procedures, designed by seasoned aviators and aircraft manufacturers, dictate precise speeds and altitudes at visual checkpoints during the descent into Paro airport.

Flights are permitted only during daylight with optimal visibility, often leading to diversions due to cloud cover.

The absence of Instrumental Landing Systems (ILS) adds to the challenge. While other airports utilize advanced navigation tools, Paro’s pilots depend on a single Very high-frequency Omni-directional Range (VOR) for guidance. Thereby there are few operators capable of operating flights including private jet flights to Paro Airport, Bhutan. With all the challenges above, it has Paro International Airport one of the world’s hardest-to-approach airports.
