Gulfstream GV — The First True Long-Range Business Jet — Vietnam Air Charter Company
This is the Gulfstream GV, recognized as the first true long-range business jet. Stay with us until the end of the video, as we cover everything you need to know about the Gulfstream GV.
Cabin Features
The Gulfstream GV’s cabin measures an impressive 7 feet 3 inches (2.2 meters) in width and reaches a height of 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 meters). It can comfortably accommodate between 14 to 19 passengers, depending on the configuration selected. The standard layout typically includes a combination of club seating, individual chairs, and divans, all equipped with adjustable lumbar support, reclining capabilities, and swivel options.
A notable feature is the entertainment console, which incorporates high-definition screens ranging from 24 to 32 inches, depending on their placement. This system is enhanced by an advanced surround sound setup and satellite communication. Adjacent to the entertainment area is a full-service galley, generally situated at the front of the cabin. For added convenience, two full-sized lavatories are typically present, one located at the front and the other at the rear.
The Gulfstream GV is equipped with a 100% fresh air system, ensuring a comfortable atmosphere within the cabin. The cabin altitude is maintained at a low level of 6,000 feet (1,828 meters). The aircraft features 12 iconic oval windows, each measuring 28 by 20.5 inches. Advanced soundproofing techniques contribute to an exceptionally quiet cabin environment, while a customizable LED lighting system allows passengers to adjust the ambiance to their liking. The onboard Wi-Fi system guarantees seamless connectivity across oceans and poles, and the Gulfstream Cabin Management System enables passengers to control lighting, window shades, and entertainment options via their smartphones or tablets.
Gulfstream GV Cockpit Design
Entering the cockpit, one is immediately impressed by its intuitive and spacious design. The cockpit features four expansive displays that provide flight crews with a comprehensive view of flight data, system status, and intricate navigation maps. Technologically advanced for its time, the Gulfstream GV was awarded the National Aeronautic Association’s Collier Trophy in 1997 for its aeronautical achievements. It boasts a six-screen Honeywell digital avionics system that remains state-of-the-art even today.
Central to the flight operations is the Honeywell SPZ-8500 avionics suite, which includes notable features such as the Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System and the Traffic Collision Avoidance System that continuously scans nearby airspace for other aircraft. Additionally, the GV is equipped with FADEC, optimizing engine performance, and a real-time 3D weather radar. The Flight Management System serves as a cornerstone of cockpit operations, complemented by the Enhanced Vision System and the Triple Inertial Reference System.
Engine, Performance Specifications, and Flight Experience
Now, let’s examine the engine, performance specifications, and overall flying experience. The GV is powered by two Rolls-Royce BR710 turbofan engines, each with a time between overhaul (TBO) of 8,000 hours. Each engine generates a thrust of 14,750 pounds. Under standard conditions, the GV requires a takeoff distance of approximately 5,150 feet (1,570 meters).
With a climb rate of 3,650 feet (1,113 meters) per minute, the GV ascends rapidly to its cruising altitude. It boasts a maximum service ceiling of 51,000 feet (15,545 meters), allowing it to cruise above most commercial air traffic at a maximum speed of Mach 0.885. The aircraft has an average fuel burn of approximately 444 gallons (1,681 liters) per hour, with an impressive maximum range of 6,500 nautical miles (12,000 kilometers). With its full-fuel payload, the GV can comfortably carry 1,200 pounds (544 kilograms). Its maximum net payload capacity is remarkable, reaching 6,500 pounds (3,000 kilograms). Finally, the GV requires a landing distance of approximately 2,770 feet (844 meters).
