Purchased in 2014 by French hotelier Arnaud Zannier, Bãi San Hô is as ethereally eclectic as his other far-flung properties in Namibia and Cambodia. This is a design-lover’s hideout: every detail is ultra-considered from the hand-washed textured walls to the bamboo fan placed just so on top of the reclaimed-wood dresser. But it’s not just for architecture snobs, it’s a beachy retreat for people who love fresh seafood and the sound of the waves first thing in the morning. .

Compared to Vietnam’s big-hitting destinations – Hôi An, Hạ Long Bay – Phú Yên, on the south central coast, is virtually unknown. The nearby township of Quy Nhon has been attracting locals away from the over developed and commercial beach centres and international visitors will soon follow suit. Bãi San Hô translates to “Bay of Corals,” which is a befitting name for the half-mile stretch of pristine beach and gorgeous Phu Yen coastline, one of Vietnam’s most biodiverse regions and arguably, also one of the country’s best kept secrets. ’

Zannier Hotels approached the construction of the property with utmost respect for the soul of the region and the untouched wilderness that surrounds the resort: innovative landscaping totally preserved the vegetation, the wildlife and prevented any erosion of the hills. Two hectares, 600 trees and 500 palm trees were replanted, using a plant nursery to provide the project with other endemic vegetation. Renewable materials and traditional local architectural methods were used to ensure a strong sense of place. In addition, there’s no single-use plastic in bedrooms, all food is local, organic and seasonal and cleaning products and toiletries are non-toxic. The property grows its own rice in the rice paddies and any excess rice is donated locally. ’
