Direct Flights from Hanoi to Con Dao To Return

Vietjet Air is set to receive two Embraer E190 aircraft to operate the direct route from Hanoi to Con Dao in the near future. This announcement was made by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam on September 27. The authority indicated that Vietjet Air is expected to acquire a total of ten aircraft, comprising eight Airbus A321s and two Embraer E190s, with the latter designated for the Hanoi-Con Dao route.

The Embraer E190 is a regional jet that was previously utilized by Bamboo Airways for direct flights between Hanoi and Con Dao. However, since April, Bamboo Airways has returned three of its aircraft early and ceased operations to Con Dao as part of a restructuring process.

Recently, Vietjet has been actively recruiting pilots and mechanics to support its E190 fleet. The introduction of this airline will provide passengers with more options, enhancing convenience and reducing travel time and costs for this popular route. Following Bamboo Airways’ withdrawal, travelers from the North have had to transfer via Tan Son Nhat or Can Tho airports before continuing their journey on ATR72 aircraft operated by Vietnam Airlines or Vasco.

Due to the short takeoff and landing runway at Con Dao airport, the facility can only accommodate aircraft such as the ATR72 and E190 or similar models. Each ATR72 flight has a maximum capacity of 66 passengers. Additionally, Con Dao airport lacks night lighting, which limits operations to daytime hours, with a maximum of 30 flights permitted per day.

Given the high demand for flights to Con Dao and the limited transport capacity of airlines, ticket prices remain elevated. A round-trip ticket from Ho Chi Minh City to Con Dao typically costs around 2.7 million VND, while Bamboo Airways’ previous direct flights from Hanoi to Con Dao were priced at no less than 3 million VND one way. Consequently, the total cost for passengers traveling from the North could reach approximately 7 million VND.

In August, the Ministry of Transport proposed an expansion of the runway at Con Dao from 30 meters to 45 meters, along with the construction of a new parallel taxiway to accommodate larger aircraft such as the A320, A321, and B737.
