Bombardier has strategically positioned its Global 5000 to directly compete with the Gulfstream 450 and Falcon 900EX markets, particularly excelling in cabin comfort.
Priced at $36.75 million, the Global 5000 was conceptualized in 1999 and began deliveries in 2005. This aircraft is a slightly shorter variant of the long-range Global Express XRS. Its cabin outmatches those of its competitors, featuring the widest cross-section (over eight feet at the centerline), the longest seating area (approximately 27 feet), and the most headroom (six feet, three inches) in its class. The interior is thoughtfully designed with three 109-inch-long zones, including enclosed forward and rear lavatories, a spacious galley capable of supporting two in-flight meals, and an optional rear stateroom. Additionally, a generously sized baggage compartment is accessible during flight through the rear lavatory.
Long Range, High Speed
The Global 5000 boasts an impressive range of 4,800 nautical miles, enabling it to reach central Asia locations from anywhere in South-east Asia. It can also fly unrefueled from Ho Chi Minh, Singapore to Dubai or from Bali to Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai, Seoul, achieving these distances an hour faster than either the Falcon or the Gulfstream, thanks to its cruise speed of Mach 0.85. This speed is powered by two Rolls-Royce Deutschland BR710A2-20 engines, each delivering 14,750 pounds of thrust and sharing technology with various airliners and business jets, including the Boeing 717 and Gulfstream 550.
At maximum takeoff weight, the aircraft requires a runway length of 5,000 feet; however, this requirement is significantly reduced for shorter missions. For instance, on a 1,000-nautical-mile flight, the Global 5000 needs only 2,743 feet of runway (at sea level and standard temperature).
With a maximum cruising altitude of 51,000 feet, the Global 5000 can navigate above most adverse weather conditions. Advanced avionics, including the Honeywell Primus 2000XP system and the Thales Heads Up flight guidance system, enhance its ability to reach destinations under various weather scenarios. Although no aircraft is entirely free from mechanical or electrical issues, the Global 5000 is equipped with innovative systems designed to mitigate downtime, such as a central aircraft information and maintenance system (CAIMS) that provides real-time data, automatically orders replacement parts, and offers installation instructions.
Passenger comfort is paramount, with substantial 16g single passenger seats that feature integral headrests, contoured backrests, fully flat berthing, and compound curve arms for natural arm placement, regardless of recline angle. Optional flex-wing headrests and additional legroom from contoured backs enhance the overall experience. Each seat can be outfitted with either industry-standard Dax foam or visco-elastic memory foam, reminiscent of Tempur-Pedic mattresses, with testing indicating less shifting in visco-elastic seats, albeit at an additional weight of 10 pounds. A fully powered seat option is also available.
The innovative bi-fold sidewall cabin tables fold out seamlessly from the top of the side ledge, creating more usable surface area, while the hi-lo conference table boasts a single-pedestal design that maximizes legroom. It also extends to be flush with the side ledge and includes four integral cup holders, regardless of table configuration. An electrically deployed version is available for added convenience.
Despite the evolutionary nature of aircraft design, the Global 5000’s thoughtfully engineered seats and tables prompt the question: why have these features not been implemented sooner?
The aircraft continues to address previous concerns regarding window size inherited from Bombardier’s regional jets. The Global 5000 utilizes these windows but introduces enhancements that increase the direct line of sight by up to 40 percent. However, taller passengers may still need to adjust their seating position to see outside.
Artificial lighting throughout the cabin is provided by light-emitting diodes, with standard options including white, amber, and red wash lights, along with an available red, green, and blue mood lighting package. Lighting can be controlled from a galley touchscreen or the VIP passenger seat, with individual reading lights at each seat.
The aircraft’s potable water system, with a capacity of 24.7 gallons, is lighter than that found on the Global Express and is designed for single-point servicing, which takes only 10 minutes. The system recirculates water in a closed loop every minute, featuring a UV sterilizer and electronic monitoring for status and fault reporting.
The Global 5000 offers both forward and aft lavatories, facilitating a private rear “stateroom” design with berthing divans. The vacuum lavatory system minimizes olfactory concerns typically associated with forward holding-tank lavatories and can be monitored electronically for maintenance needs, requiring servicing only every 128 flushes and utilizing 16 gallons of fluid.
The galley is designed to accommodate two five-course meal services (eight passengers each), equipped with microwave and high-temperature convection ovens, as well as a chiller.
Incorporating the upgradeable Rockwell Collins Airshow 21 system, the Global 5000 features all the latest technological advancements, including digital Ethernet and on-demand audiovisual distribution to laptops, high-speed data capability, onboard firewall, and dedicated channels for Inmarsat and Iridium satellite communications.
The aircraft offers a single basic cabin configuration with 300 possible permutations, allowing for customization such as enlarged lavatories or alternative seating arrangements in place of the conference grouping.
In summary, the Global 5000’s cabin is characterized by comfort, flexibility, and innovation, positioning it as a formidable competitor to both Dassault and Gulfstream.
