Inaugurated in December 2012, Phu Quoc International Airport is the only international airport on Phu Quoc Island, Kien Giang Province. 1.2. Geographical location

Phu Quoc International Airport is located in the south of Phu Quoc Island, about 10km south of Duong Dong City center. The airport covers an area of ​​900 hectares, is built on the mainland and near Thom Bay, has a 3,000 meter long runway that can accommodate large aircraft. From the airport, visitors can travel to famous tourist destinations on the island such as Sao Beach, Khem Beach, Khem Beach, Rach Vem (Starfish beach) and Ham Rong (Loong-mouth Beach), Vung Bau, Tranh Stream, Da Ban Stream, South Phu Quoc Islands.

 

1.3 Development process

Phu Quoc Airport was built during the French colonial period, mainly transporting DC3 aircraft with a capacity of 32 seats, and then continued to be exploited during the period when the US imperialists invaded the South.

The airport underwent an upgrade in 1983 from 996m to 1496m, which can accommodate larger aircraft. The terminal and some supporting facilities were built in 1994-1995.

In 2003, there was also a 1,200 billion VND investment project to upgrade Phu Quoc Airport, including extending the runway to 3,000m, building an aircraft parking lot, and installing a signal information system to increase the capacity of this airport from more than 100,000 to 1-2 million passengers/year. After the upgrade, the airport can accommodate medium-sized aircraft. The initial plan, if approved, was to start the project in 2004. However, this project was not implemented and was replaced by a new airport construction project with a total long-term investment of more than 16,200 billion VND.

 

2. Structure And Infrastructure Of Phu Quoc International Airport

 

2.1. Runway system

The runway system of Phu Quoc airport is modern and meets the development needs.

The airport currently has two parallel runways, each 3,050 meters long and 45 meters wide, large enough to accommodate large aircraft such as Boeing 777 and Airbus A350.

In addition, the runway system is also equipped with precise positioning measurement equipment to ensure flight safety.

 

2.2. Aircraft parking area

The aircraft parking area is designed with a large area, capable of simultaneously accommodating many different types of aircraft. Currently, the airport has 8 aircraft sizes from ATR 72 to Boeing 747 and Airbus A350.

The parking areas are distributed according to each group of aircraft, with full facilities such as navigation lights, information systems, fuel and drinking water supply systems for aircraft. The parking area is scientifically arranged to ensure safety, convenience and speed for aircraft parking and take-off.

 

2.3. Passenger Terminal

The passenger terminal of Phu Quoc airport has a total floor area of ​​24,325 m2, divided into 2 floors.

The ground floor is designed to receive and serve domestic and international arrivals, including a baggage sorting area, customs area, technical rooms, consumer goods counters and food services.

The first floor is arranged to serve domestic and international departures, including functional areas such as check-in counters, security areas, checked baggage conveyor belts, waiting rooms and duty-free shops, food counters.

Scale of the main passenger terminal:

• The passenger terminal has 02 levels, departure and arrival are separate, the arrival terminal is on the ground floor, the departure terminal is on the 1st floor. The international terminal is located in the eastern half, the domestic terminal is located in the western half;
• The total floor area of ​​the 1st floor is 11,150m2; the total floor area of ​​the ground floor is 13,026m2;
• The international terminal has an area: departure 5,433 m2, arrival 6,097 m2;
• The domestic terminal has an area: departure 4,716 m2, arrival 4,625 m2;
• There are 36 check-in counters for passengers (18 international, 18 domestic)
• In the first phase, 10 security screening machines will be arranged (06 international, 04 domestic)
• There are 03 arrival baggage conveyors (01 international, 02 domestic).
