3. Infrastructure<\/strong><\/h3>\n

With the previous infrastructure conditions of Con Son Airport, the reception of fixed-wing aircraft was not possible. Therefore, implementing the investment and stimulus policy of the Government, the Ministry of Transport and the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam allowed the Southern Airports Group to start the project “Renovation and upgrading of Con Son Airport – Phase 1” on July 7, 2003, and complete it on January 5, 2004, to ensure that the airport can receive civil aircraft such as ATR 72 and equivalent, and at the same time ensure the exploitation of existing military aircraft.<\/p>\n

After the project “Renovation and upgrading of Con Son Airport” was started in July 2003 and by the end of 2004, the construction items were completed and put into operation, Con Son Airport has a runway measuring 1,830 meters long and 30 meters wide; A new taxiway is 80m long and 15m wide; The civil aviation area’s aircraft parking area has been renovated and expanded to an area of \u200b\u200b9,270m2 with 2 parking positions for ATR 72 and Fokker 70.<\/p>\n

On July 3, 2004, the Southern Airports Group started construction of Con Son Airport Terminal and completed it before the Lunar New Year of the Rooster (2005). The passenger terminal was built with the capacity to serve 180 passengers\/peak hour with a total terminal area of \u200b\u200b2,777m2, including 2 floors (1 ground floor, 1 mezzanine).<\/p>\n

On May 9, 2004, Con Son Airport came into operation, serving the first flight on the Ho Chi Minh City – Con Dao – Ho Chi Minh City route of Vietnam Air Services Company (VASCO), not only creating favorable conditions to serve civil needs, oil and gas services, sea rescue, creating conditions for people across the country and international friends to come and explore Con Dao but also contributing to promoting the economic, social and tourism development of Con Dao, together with the islanders to accelerate the process of modernization, industrialization, and development in all aspects of the entire island.<\/p>\n

In 2004, Con Son Airport safely served 96 take-offs and landings, served 1,454 arriving and departing passengers, and transported 9,944 kg of goods, luggage, and parcels.<\/p>\n

In 2005, Con Son Airport safely served 704 takeoffs and landings, served 19,839 arriving passengers and transported 128 tons of cargo, luggage and parcels.<\/p>\n

In the first four months of 2006, Con Son Airport safely served 108 takeoffs and landings – reaching 26.34% of the yearly plan, served 9,994 arriving passengers – reaching 28.81% of the yearly plan, and transported 45,395 kg of cargo, luggage, and parcels – reaching 33.37% of the yearly plan.<\/p>\n

Vietnam Air Services Company operates the route from Ho Chi Minh City to Con Dao and vice versa on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays using ATR 72 aircraft.<\/p>\n

5. Con Dao Airport Upgrade and Expansion Project<\/h3>\n

Vietnam government made a plan on the upgrade and expansion of Co Ong airport with a designed catering capacity of 4-5 million passengers a year, ten times more than the current capacity.<\/p>\n

The project will invest in expanding and upgrading the existing runway structure according to the plan with a size of 1,830mx45m; building a new parallel taxiway and connecting taxiways; adding items to ensure safety in night lighting operations; a synchronous landing equipment system to effectively exploit code C aircraft (such as A319, A320neo\/CEO, B737-7\/8 and equivalent) by the direction of the Prime Minister and according to the plan. Thus, the project’s investment scale is consistent with international consultants’ recommendations to improve Con Dao Airport’s operational capacity.<\/p>\n
